Apex Legends features a variety of game modes, which can go from tweaking the way Battle Royale is played to completely change the gameplay.
There are currently eight permanent modes: Training, Firing Range, Battle Royale Trios and Duos, Ranked Leagues and the Mixtape (Control, Gun Run and Team Deathmatch).
During some Events, a Limited Time Mode or Takeover may be enabled for play. Takeovers directly affect either all or some Battle Royale modes.

Evolved | BR Trios variant where the only available items are shotguns and sniper rifles, their Attachments, Evo Shields, and Helmets. Weapons and Syringes spawn more frequently. Ground loot spawns less frequently. Respawn Beacons are disabled. | |
Shadowfall Limited Time Mode |
Sixty Legends compete against each other to survive. When a Legend dies, they become a Shadow. Once ten alive Legends remain, they must escape on an Evac Ship while the Shadows try to stop them. Jump Towers are disabled. | |
Winter Express Limited Time Mode |
Three squads of three Legends compete against each other to capture the Train. | |
Gold Rush Duos Limited Time Mode |
BR Duos variant where thirty squads of two Legends compete against each other to be the last squad standing. The only available weapons are seasonal Fully Kitted Weapons and Supply Drop Weapons. Attachments don't spawn. | |

BR Trios variant where in every match, items spawn in the same spots, Care Packages land in the same spots and contain the same items, the Drop Ship takes the same route, and The Ring ends in the same location. | |
Battle Armor Limited Time Mode |
BR Trios variant where Legends are equipped with a P2020 with a 1x Holo, 2 Syringes, and 20 Light Rounds. They are also equipped with a Body Shield whose type changes depending on the level of the mode. Body Shields cannot be found. This mode Escalates, which means every few days it levels up and something changes. | |
Flashpoint Limited Time Mode |
BR Trios variant where some named locations are engulfed in a Flashpoint Zone, which automatically regenerate damaged shields and health of the Legends inside it after not taking damage for a short while. The Ring never stops moving until the Final Round, and always deals Final Round damage. Regen Items cannot be found. | |
Shadow Royale Limited Time Mode |
BR Trios variant where instead of dropping their Banner Card, dead Legends respawn as Shadows. Shadows respawn automatically upon death as long as they have at least one non-Shadow squadmate in their squad. | |
Airdrop Escalation Limited Time Takeover (BR) |
Instead of the standard four Care Packages that contain Supply Drop Weapons, way more Care Packages that contain Fully Kitted Weapons and Gear spawn, whose rarity changes depending on the Care Package beam's color. | |
Locked and Loaded Limited Time Takeover (BR) |
Legends are equipped with Level 1 Gear, a Mozambique with a Shotgun Bolt and 1x HCOG "Classic", 2 Shield Cells, 2 Syringes, and 16 Shotgun Shells. Level 1 items don't spawn. | |
Ring Fury Limited Time Takeover (BR) |
Ring Flares, which act as smaller Rings, appear on the map. Heat Shields spawn more frequently. This mode Escalates, which means every few days it levels up and something changes. | |
Second Chance Limited Time Takeover (BR) |
Legends are equipped with a Respawn Token, which allows them to respawn once per match with all their items if used manually while Bleeding Out, or automatically upon death. | |
Armor Regen Limited Time Takeover (BR) |
Shields regenerate automatically when not taking damage for a short while. Shield Cells don't spawn. | |
Ultra Zones Limited Time Takeover (BR) |
Three Hot Zones instead of one are available on the map, and each one is engulfed in a Flashpoint Zone. | |
Auto Banners Limited Time Takeover (BR) |
Banner Cards are automatically retrieved and Mobile Respawn Beacons spawn more frequently. | |
Arenas Limited Time Mode |
Two squads of three Legends compete against each other to win as many Rounds as possible. | |

BR Trios variant where the overall difficulty is raised through various changes. | |
Date Night Limited Time Takeover (BR Duos) |
Using a Regen item near a squadmate also heals them for the same amount. The Heart Stealer can spawn. | |
TDM - Unshielded Limited Time Mode |
Team Deathmatch variant where everyone uses the same Loadout and nobody has any Gear equipped. | |
Living Shell Trios Limited Time Takeover (BR Trios) |
Rev Shells can spawn. Rev Shells are special grenades that lock onto enemies. | |
Tricks N’ Treats Trios Limited Time Takeover (BR Trios) |
Copycat Kits and Candy can spawn. Evo Shields and Body Shields cannot spawn. Copycat Kits randomly spawn which gives a player a random Legend ability in their Survival Item slot. Candy levels up shields and decreases Ultimate ability charge time. | |
Three Strikes Limited Time Mode |
Teams can respawn up to two times with all of their loot when they are eliminated. Downed players cannot be killed nor executed, and revives are significantly faster. | |
Revenant Uprising Limited Time Mode |
30 Legends must make their way to an evac point while being hunted by a Revenant army. Fallen squads join the Revenant team. | |
FINAL FANTASY VII Takeover Limited Time Takeover (BR Trios) |
Materia and Buster Sword R2R5s can spawn. Materia are Hop-Ups that are limited to certain weapons and grant special perks to the weapon. They are guaranteed to be found in CacTicks. The Buster Sword R2R5 is a Mythic melee weapon that can be found on the ground in some places or in Care Packages. |

These modes are unlikely to return as they were released for a special occasion, usually lore-related.

Season 5 | Loba tasks the other Legends with recovering an ancient artifact from another dimension, ruled by a familiar face. This mode is split into 10 different chapters. |
Olympus Preview Limited Time Mode |
First 7 days of Season 7 | This mode was made to help players get familiar with the freshly-introduced Olympus Battle Royale map. Fighting is disabled, although loot still spawns. Once the Final Ring closes, the map gets reloaded with the players still in it. |
Kill Code: A Thief's Bane Lore-related Mode |
Last 17 days of Season 17 | Loba goes through an abandoned facility on Salvo, trying to figure out what Torres Silva is planning to do in the near future. |
Node Tracker Lore-related Takeover (BR) |
Neon Network | Legends are automatically equipped with a Node Tracker. Following the Node Tracker signal to a designated area will trigger the Node Tracker, awarding the Legend with a special Loot Tick and some Compute Nodes to spend in the Event-related Store. |
