Hm... Son, you think you've got what it takes? They call us Apex Legends. But not all Legends are heroes. Each fight for their own reasons. From the ashes of war, Legends are born. They are icons of strength, power. Outside the ring, they're champions. Inside, they're equals. But the goal remains the same, become an Apex Legend. I say it's a sport of survival. You ask me? It's simple, eh. They kill you, they're better. You kill them, you're better.

Legends

Legends are playable characters in Apex Legends. Each Legend is a unique character with their own backstory, abilities, and playstyle. Most Legends need to be unlocked by using Legend Tokens Legend Tokens or Apex Coins Apex Coins. A new Legend is released every season.

Legends are categorized into classes: Offensive Offensive, Defensive Defensive, Support Support, and Recon Recon. These classes can have perks that apply for all Legends of that class. Currently, there is only 1 class with a perk: Legends of the Recon Recon class can scan Survey Beacon Survey Beacons to find the next location of the Ring.

Common Legend Abilities

Each Legend is defined by their unique tactical ability, passive ability, and ultimate ability.

However, the following are common to all Legends (unless modified by their abilities):

  • Legends can sprint, jump, crouch, crouch walk, slide and climb walls up to 5-6 meters tall.
  • Using their jump kits, Legends can skydive from high altitudes and boost themselves along zip lines.
  • Legends can equip two weapons of any type, as well as one of each kind of gear.
  • Legends have 10 slots in their inventory that they can use to carry ammo, regen items, grenades, or spare attachments. Equipping a Backpack Backpack adds more slots.
  • Legends can melee attack at any time. It has a short windup, but deals 30 damage and knocks enemies back a bit.
  • When downed, Legends can still crawl slowly and defend themselves with a Knockdown Shield Knockdown Shield if they have one. Squadmates that are still up can revive them.
  • If killed while downed, Legends drop a death box that contains all of the items they had, as well as a banner card that squadmates can use at a Respawn Beacon to bring them back.
  • Legends can perform finishers on downed enemies, refueling their Body Shield Body Shield and finishing off the target.

Hitboxes

Legend models

Gibraltar, Caustic, Revenant, and Pathfinder are "large" Legends. Wraith, Lifeline, and Wattson are "small" Legends. Everyone else is a "medium" Legend. Everyone within those groups use the same hitbox "rig," with the exceptions of Pathfinder, Revenant, and Wraith.

Legends come in three different sizes: large, medium, and small. Though each Legend's hitbox is a bit different, all Legends of the same size use the same hitbox "rig" in which their hitboxes are based off of, except for Pathfinder, Revenant, and Wraith.[1][2][3] Therefore, Caustic's hitbox is the same size as Gibraltar's;[2] Wattson's hitbox is the same size as Lifeline's;[4][5][6][7] and Mirage's hitbox is the same size as Bangalore's, Octane's, Crypto's, etc.[8][9] This also means that Bloodhound has the exact same head hitbox as all the other medium Legends, despite their head looking bigger.[10][11][12] (Daniel Klein provided images of Bloodhound's hitbox and Bangalore's hitbox to prove this.) Because hitbox sizes significantly impact gameplay, Fortified Fortified and Low Profile Low Profile were added in an attempt to even the playing field.[2][13]

Pathfinder, Revenant, and Wraith are the exceptions:[1][14]

  • Pathfinder's hitbox currently sits between the large and medium rigs, with it leaning towards large.[3]
    • Pathfinder was originally on the large rig (like Gibraltar and Caustic), but this made little sense with his skinny model.[15] In Season 1 Season 1, his hitbox was reduced to the point that it was skinnier than a medium Legend's;[16] however, this increased his win rate so much that he was given Low Profile Low Profile.[15] In Season 7 Season 7, Pathfinder's hitbox was increased, and Low Profile was eventually removed.
  • Revenant's hitbox leans towards the large rig. It is big enough to be considered having Fortified Fortified.[17]
    • Before being released, Revenant had the same skinny hitbox Pathfinder had (at the time), but it was adjusted to be bigger last minute. The developers were not aware of the last-minute hitbox change, which caused Revenant to be released with Low Profile even though his hitbox did not warrant it.[18] Low Profile was later removed.
  • Wraith's hitbox currently sits between the small and medium rigs, with it leaning towards medium.[3][6]
    • Wraith was originally on the small rig (like Lifeline and Wattson).[5] It was increased in Season 8 Season 8 to lower her incredibly high win rate.

Even with the same hitbox, some Legends are still more difficult to hit due to having unique animations. For example, Wraith used to tucked her head in a lot during her sprint animation which made her harder to hit than other small Legends (back when Wraith was on the small rig).[2][5]

Development

  • It takes roughly 9-11 months to create a Legend. Pre-production, each Legend's design goes through many changes, but once the design is approved and finalized, the next nine months are spent getting the character out. By that point, quick and sudden changes to the design cannot be made.[19]

Trivia

  • Pathfinder was originally classified under Support Legend Icon Support. He was moved to Recon Legend Icon Recon at the start of Season 4 Season 4.
  • According to Daniel Klein, the Offensive Legend Icon Offensive class is more of an absence of a class than a class of its own.[20] It is where Legends that do not belong in the other three classes are put.
  • Forge was announced as the Legend for Season 4 Season 4, but it was a misdirect. Forge was killed by the true Season 4 Season 4 Legend, Revenant, in "Up Close and Personal".
  • Some Legends have an alternative descriptor on the official website.
    • Octane's descriptor is "High-Speed Daredevil" in the game and "The Adrenaline Junkie" on the website.
    • Loba's descriptor is "Translocating Thief" in the game and "High Society Thief" on the website.
    • Rampart's descriptor is "Base of Fire" in the game and "Quick Witted Modder" on the website.
    • Fuse's descriptor is "Explosives Enthusiast" in the game and "Bombastic Explosives Expert" on the website.
