Mobile Shield[]

Mobile Shield.svg Tactical Q/LB/L1/LB
Mobile Shield
Description Throw a drone that projects a moveable energy shield.
Cooldown 15 seconds

  • Throws a drone that projects a large shield in front of it.
    • Maximum thrown distance is 25m; it will then travel to the reticle
    • If the drone hits an enemy, it will deal 20 damage.
  • Mobile Shield's movement speed is equivalent to crouch speed with weapons out.
  • Lasts 20 seconds unless destroyed. A loud hum can be heard when the drone is about to fade out.
  • Press the tactical button again to target a new location for it to float to, without changing shield's orientation
    • Doing so within 1m radius of the drone will also reorients the front to face the same direction as you, in addition to move the drone to the reticle
  • The shield consists of an upper half and lower half. Each half has 350 health, and can be destroyed separately.
  • Newcastle and his squadmates cannot damage a friendly shield, nor shoot through it.

  • Due to the fact that the shield is slow in movement, consider the general vincinity of where you will fight.
  • Consider its overall cooldown time as 35 seconds instead.
  • The Mobile shield's effective range is anywhere you have line of sight.
    • Deployment provide users a safe space to confirm enemy's precise location

  • Retrieve the Wounded[]

    Retrieve the Wounded.svg Passive
    Retrieve the Wounded
Description Drag downed allies as you revive and protect them with your Revive Shield.
    Cooldown ?

    • The health of the Revive Shield is dependent on the level of Newcastle's Knockdown Shield.svg Knockdown Shield:
      • Level 1: 150
      • Level 2: 250
      • Level 3/Level 4: 500
    • The Knockdown Shield starts to regenerate after [?] seconds and takes [?] seconds to fully recharge.

  • Cannot drag himself around while using Self-Revive
  • Cannot utilize Wraith's portal while reviving
  • Conducting the following actions while reviving will automatically disengage the revive:
    • Falling
    • Using Gravity Cannon
    • Using Octane's jump pad
    • Using Horizon's gravity lift

  • Note that having knockdown shield activated is loud (in addition to being visible)
    • A way to stealth the revive is to drop the knockdown shield before using it.
  • A get-around the slow recharge of the knockdown shield is to drop it and pick it back up.
  • While you cannot use Wraith's portal while reviving, you can still drag your teammate. Thus it is still viable to drag and "revive" your teammate to a wraith's portal for safety.

  • Reviving a squadmate in Battle Royale causes the Knockdown Shield's health to appear to drop to 0% and not regenerate.
    • A get-around the bug is to drop the knockdown shield and pick it back up.

  • Castle Wall[]

    Castle Wall.svg Ultimate Z/LB+RB/L1+R1/LB+RB
    Castle Wall
Description Leap to an ally or target area and slam down, creating a fortified stronghold.
    Charge time 2 minutes

    • Target an area, which Newcastle will leap to. Upon landing, a large wall will be constructed facing the direction Newcastle is looking.
      • Leaping has a maximum range of 35 meters.
      • Can choose to target a squadmate or squadmate's Death Box to land on, which extends the range to 75 meters.
    • The wall is made of 9 segments, each with 750 health.
      • The segments in the middle and the ends are much larger than the other six.
      • Newcastle can take down segments of his wall by pressing H/Down/Down.
      • Each part of the wall can be destroyed with 2 melee attacks.
      • The short segments, when destroyed by attacks, will also bring down the other short segments near them
    • The outward facing side is electrified for 30 seconds, stunning and dealing 20 damage to enemies who attempt to climb over it.
    • If Newcastle uses the ultimate but for some reason does not land and make the wall (including being downed), 70% of the charge is refunded.

  • If Newcastle targets a squadmate to land on, the flight path will adjust to account for their movement, even if they use an ability like Burglar's Best Friend.svg Burglar's Best Friend or Death Totem.svg Death Totem which teleports them. However, if the squadmate teleports more than 75 meters away, the jump is simply canceled.

  • You can turn around mid-leap to orient the wall differently.
  • You don't need direct line of sight to target a squadmate to land on. As long as there's a viable flight path, you can jump to them.
    • You can also target squadmates who are far above you.

  • You can target a teammate's deathbox at any distance, and fly for 200 meters before stopping. Since the wall isn't placed, the ultimate charge will be refunded to 70% at such situation.

  • Fortified[]

    Fortified.svg Perk
Description Incoming damage reduced by 15%. Not slowed by bullets.
    Cooldown ?

    • Take 15% less damage from every attack, except headshots.

  • Don't overestimate this ability, 15% less generally translates to surviving 1 more shot.

  • Lore[]

Lamont Craig wasn’t like other dads in the neighborhood. Sure, he dropped the kids off at school and acted out multiple voices every night for Story Time with his toddler. But Lamont had secrets—the first being his real name, Jackson Williams.

A top soldier for the IMC, Jackson went AWOL when he ignored direct orders to fight what he believed was a losing battle. He knew he would never be safe from the remnants of the IMC--and neither would his sister, Anita, as long as she was with him. So when he was presumed dead in a ship explosion, he used that opportunity to leave his life behind, even if it meant leaving her behind too.

Years later, "Lamont" moved to an idyllic little town called Harris Valley, where he fell in love and got married. Harris Valley was so peaceful that they didn’t need law enforcement. All they needed was their knight, Newcastle. But the knight had secrets of his own: Newcastle had sold off the town to pay off his debts, and thugs from a gang called the Forgotten Families came to collect. They killed Newcastle when he couldn’t pay, unaware that Lamont was watching. He defeated them using his military acumen, but the Forgotten Families had plenty of reinforcements.

So Lamont came up with a dangerous solution. With Newcastle’s armor, he could take on his identity and do what Newcastle could not: get into the Apex Games. With prize money like that, he could definitely pay off the debts. But not without the risk of being discovered by his little sister, the Apex Legend, Bangalore.

Jackson Williams was born in 2964 on Gridiron to Felicia & Ronald Williams. The Williams family was a military family, and he was raised with his three older brothers & little sister, Anita, to serve in the IMC armed forces, as did four generations before him.[3] Throughout childhood, Jackson and Anita held a strong kinship and a friendly rivalry. The two created a lifeline game to see who would be the “better Williams sibling”, competing at even menial tasks. They kept a scorecard between them, including tasks such as “who said their first word first," “fastest time to disassemble an R-201." “who met Vice Admiral Graves first,” and “who spit on Vice Admiral Graves (post-betrayal) first."[4]

One famous tradition kept by the family was the Williams Sendoff. The morning before a Williams child was to be deployed, the family would share one last round of beers together and fashion the bottle caps into a bracelet. That way, the departing soldier would have a memento to remind them that the family was always together, no matter how far apart.[4]

The siblings entered basic training at the same time and spent the whole time together. Jackson additionally obtained the prestigious Combat Pilot Certification during this time, obtaining a Titan of an unknown class.[4]

Jackson was known to be a prolific prankster, and he and Anita often broke into prank wars. During one, Anita spiked his rations with laxatives, only for them to be eaten by their commanding officer. As punishment, the siblings were forced to clean an Essex-class cruiser with toothbrushes.[5] Another time, during a bow shooting competition, Jackson knocked Anita’s elbow before her final shot, causing him to win by a single point.[6]

On the day of their graduation, the siblings’ score card was tied, with each side having completed 99 tasks. Jackson received his marching orders a few days before Anita, seemingly cementing him as the “better” Williams sibling. She tore the card to shreds in anger after this. After graduation, as Jackson approached Anita to give her a gift, the destruction of Typhon by the Frontier Militia was announced. All of the hundreds of thousands of IMC personnel on the planet had perished - including Zeke, the oldest Williams sibling.[4]

Jackson, not trusting Anita to go rogue after receiving this news, was granted a transfer and received the same deployment as his sister, becoming the commanding officer of the IMS Hestia-01.[4]

    Battle of Gridiron[]

After the Battle of Typhon, the IMC’s resources became concentrated on Gridiron. During this time, losses continued to mount - the Apex Predators departed, as their contract had been fulfilled, and Vice Admiral Spyglass' Remnant Fleet deserted. With these losses and the loss of Typhon, the IMC became desperate, and the Militia eventually surrounded the planet.

Jackson and Anita both participated in the Battle of Gridiron, with the latter being stabbed by a Militia Cloak Pilot during the fighting. After recovering his sister and becoming disillusioned with the IMC, Jackson decided that Gridiron was lost and it was against the crew of the Hestia-01’s best interest to continue fighting, and thus decided to ignore the direct order to keep fighting, opting to retreat instead. Anita protested this desertion, and Jackson was forced to sedate her to prevent her from starting a mutiny.[7] An item from Typhon, a powerful energy source possibly related to the Ark which powered Typhon’s Fold Weapon, was used to amplify the vessel’s drives, allowing it to travel from Gridiron to the borders of the Outlands in less than a year - far less than the twenty years this trip would normally take. When the crew arrived in the Outlands, the fuel source was exhausted, and a return trip would take its normal length of decades. Additionally, the Blackout had begun, extinguishing all sources of communication with the rest of the frontier, including Gridiron.[4]

After arriving in the Outlands, the Hestia-01 crash-landed on the Gaean island of Storm Point. The survivors created a small but successful settlement at the crash site, with Jackson as its leader.

In 2716, Jackson greeted a newly-awoken Anita, explaining the situation and welcoming her to their new home. Anita, bewildered by this turn of events, stormed off. Sending an SOS signal, she remembered how Jackson had effectively led the entire crew in committing treason. She confronted Jackson in a cantina, attacking him for his betrayal. Just then, Scryer, an IMC commander who had responded to the SOS signal, arrived on his personal ship and attempted to execute Jackson for treason. Anita intervened, and the siblings began to fight off Scryer.

After indiscriminately bombing the settlement, Scryer began to mock the siblings and engaged them in combat. Through their combined efforts, Jackson and Anita killed Scryer. The crew commandeered Scryer’s ship, rechristening it as the IMS Hestia-02. Jackson, resigning himself to forever running from the IMC, boarded the vessel, with Anita joining him.[7]

Over the next five years, the crew of the Hestia-02 took odd jobs to get by. Finally, in 2721, Jackson revealed to Anita the true reason behind their truancy: the ARES Division, an archaeological unit of the IMC, was planning on using a device known as the Fold Weapon to decimate various planets across the Frontier and force the Militia into submission.[8] The Militia had killed thousands of people to save billions.

Roughly a week after this revelation, a grenade exploded on the outer hull of the Hestia-02 when it was above Solace. Jackson shielded Anita from the blast, but was lost after losing his grip on his sister.[9] Jackson survived this incident; however, he knew the IMC remnants would keep pursuing him and Anita. He used this opportunity to leave his old life behind, refusing to contact his sister for her own safety.

Some years later, Jackson settled in the community of Harris Valley on Solace, using the name Lamont Craig. By 2727, he met a woman there and married her. On the night of his wedding,[10] he recorded a video, hoping to send it to his parents on Gridiron. This video was later found by Anita.[11]

By 2729, a corpse matching Jackson’s height, weight, and blood type was recovered on Solace. The body was buried after two weeks, but the records of where were lost in a fire in 2731.[12]

Jackson's new family later grew to include two children. His daughter, Larissa Craig was born on May 3, 2731.[10]

The people of Harris Valley would often come together to celebrate Newcastle, a local warrior who was idolized despite his many failed attempts to enter the Apex Games. During one such celebration, Jackson purchased a stuffed toy of the hero for his daughter.

One night, Larissa lost the doll and Jackson ventured out to find it. Finding the toy outside of a local store, he heard a commotion nearby. He rounded the corner to find Rene, the true identity of Newcastle, who was being beat up by a group of mob members, as he had once again failed to join the Games in order to pay off his debts. Failing to convince the gang, Rene was shot, and Jackson intervened before the killing blow could be dealt. He ordered the thugs to leave, but they declined, stating that Rene had sold the city to the "Forgotten Families". Jackson made a deal with the men, agreeing to join the Games on his first attempt in order to pay off Rene's debts.

After the gang departed, Jackson went to assist Rene, who soon succumbed to his wounds. Taking on the mantle of Newcastle, Jackson became the newest Legend, hoping to save his town and finally reunite with his sister.[13]

    Season 13 Launch Trailer[]

Jackson attended Anita's farewell party, which took place on the dropship before what was intended to be Anita's final Apex Games match. As they approached the drop zone, he was placed on a team with Anita and Mirage.

Landing on Storm Point, a violent tremor caused an IMC security installation to rise from the ground. Jackson and Anita entered to find a large weapons cache, but as Anita grabbed a HAVOC, Specters were activated in defense. Together, the two defeated the robots, only to be met by a larger threat -- the large aquatic beast that had been causing the tremors came ashore. Rallying together with the other Legends, the two were able to fell the creature.

Jackson recovered against a nearby rock, attempting to hide a bottlecap bracelet. Anita approached him and removed his helmet, proving that the new legend was indeed Jackson.[14]

    Family Secrets[]

After a match on Storm Point, Jackson and Anita began to argue, with his sister questioning why he wouldn't give her any information. Soon after, Jackson received a phone call from the Forgotten Families, refusing to answer it in Anita's presence. Taking the call, he agreed to meet at an unspecified location to transfer his winnings. Unbeknownst to him, this was overheard by Wraith and Mirage.[15]

    • According to former writer Tom Casiello, Jackson was originally intended to be a Legend known as Downfall, who was an anarchist and a protester, had bomb-throwing abilities, and would have came out in 2020 or 2021. This also would have put him in direct conflict with his pro-military sister, Bangalore. However, releasing such a Legend at the height of Black Lives Matter protests would have been disastrous and the idea was abandoned. Furthermore, Downfall got shelved when his designer left Apex Legends.[16]
    • Newcastle's modern kit is based on a prototype Legend named Axiom. This character was designed based on a "defensive push," containing the mobile shield but having more of a "breach-and-clear" playstyle. Axiom was scrapped out of belief that their kit would be too selfish.[17]

    Datamined and Leaked Data[]

    Newcastle Leaked Icon.png

Newcastle was never heard from again until a leak that happened during Season 12.svg Season 12, where he appears along the other Legends in the Legends menu. A massive leak on March 22, 2022 showed Newcastle's full model, abilities, and some of his cosmetic items. The only difference between leaked version and the release version is the Mobile Shield is unbreakable in the leaked version.

During The Williams Sendoff, A line in the Korean Subtitle utilized "Newcastle" in places where "Jackson" would have been for other language.[21]

    • Newcastle is the only Legend known to be married.[22]
    • Newcastle's favorite holiday is April Fools' Day.[23]
    • Newcastle and Ash are the only known combat-certified Pilots to join the Apex Games.[4]
    • Newcastle and Bangalore are the only blood-related family members to participate in the Apex Games.
    • Newcastle's blood type is O+.[24]
    • Prior to taking on the identity of Newcastle, Jackson would often repair the fighter's armor.[13]
      • Jackson seems to own a shop in Harris Valley called Lamont's Hand.[13]
    • Newcastle's fans call themselves "Castleheads".[25]
    • Newcastle is heavily associated with the rook chess piece.
      • His logo is resembles a rook. Specifically, it is a shield split in half, which embodies that duality and represents the castle, the shield, and the double life that Jackson is living. [17]
      • His ultimate, Castle Wall, is similar to the technique of castling, where a rook is moved and jumped to protect a king.
      • In "Gridiron", Jackson is seen seated behind a chess board, with a single captured rook in front of him.
    • Newcastle's voice actor, Gabe Kunda, previously provided the voice of a doctor in the "Ashes to Ash" Stories from the Outlands short. Coincidentally, the doctor he was speaking to was voiced by Erica Luttrell, the voice actress of Bangalore.[26]
    • A previous version of his official bio on the EA webpage implied the main reason he left the IMC is due to epiphany of IMC's war crimes, emphasizing on him being on the side of "bad guys" [27]; this was brought up by some players[28] and was eventually corrected on the English version of the webpage. Other language's version of Jackson Bios, such as those in Chinese, retain the translation of the old write up.[29]
    • Newcastle is the only Legend with a finisher that is exclusively used against a particular legend, that being Bangalore.
      • This also makes Newcastle the only Legend with two default finishers.
